It’s a sunny day in the prison yard. This is the hour we get to enjoy the outdoors and have some fresh air.

Brown and his buddies are playing basketball. As promised, he and his goons have left me alone. Even though we’re still cellmates, Brown barely acknowledges my presence when we’re in lockdown.

It’s odd how self-segregated the population inside the prison is. Blacks hang with blacks. Whites with whites. Mexicans with Mexicans. Asians with Asians. The last gang is the Italians, whose leader is Nicco, the smallest group but the most feared and respected of all. And then there are the rest of us, like me. The loners.

Nicco is across the yard from me smoking a cigarette with his buddies. He and I haven’t said a word to each other since my first day. Still, I know he’s been keeping an eye on me. I still don’t know why he stepped in when Brown and his friends were kicking my ass. I’ve thought about walking up and just asking Nicco, but I’m not sure that would be a good idea. I’m still learning the ins and outs of prison life.

I can’t believe it’s only been a month that I’ve been inside this hellhole. Only one hundred nineteen months left of my sentence. Three thousand twenty days, but who’s counting?

I spot Nicco walking alone, straight to me. Shit, here we go.

“Hey, Doc,” he says.

Him calling me that stings. My dream of being a doctor is over. “Hey.”

Nicco holds out a cigarette for me.

“Thanks, but I don’t smoke.”

“You will. Everyone does in here.”

“Maybe so. But not today, Nicco.”

He grins and lights the cigarette, taking a long drag. “You remind me of my little brother. You’ve got fire in your gut just like Tony.”

“That’s why you helped me. At the county jail and here on my first day. Because I remind you of your brother.”

“Yeah. He’s smart like you, too.” He leans forward and in a low tone says, “And he’s gay.”

Fuck. Nicco wants more than I’m willing to give.

“I’m not gay,” I lie, hating the closet but understanding why I must remain inside it—just like I must remain inside this goddamn prison. “I will never let you fuck me.”

“You’ve got the wrong idea, Doc. I don’t want to fuck you. But I am going to protect you just like I would my fratellino if he was inside these walls.”

“Thanks, Nicco, but I can take care of myself.”

“That’s for sure. You’ve already proven that on your first day by kicking Brown’s pussy ass.” He laughs, which makes me smile. “Listen up, Doc. Everyone can use friends, especially inside this place. Just know I’ve got your back.” He puts his arm around my shoulders. “Everyone is watching.”

He’s right. Every pair of criminal eyes are turned our direction.

“This deal is sealed, Doc. No one will bother you now.”

I realize how lucky I am to have him as a friend. “Thanks, Nicco. What can I do for you?”

“Not a damn thing.”
