Itâs a sunny day in the prison yard. This is the hour we get to enjoy the outdoors and have some fresh air.
Brown and his buddies are playing basketball. As promised, he and his goons have left me alone. Even though weâre still cellmates, Brown barely acknowledges my presence when weâre in lockdown.
Itâs odd how self-segregated the population inside the prison is. Blacks hang with blacks. Whites with whites. Mexicans with Mexicans. Asians with Asians. The last gang is the Italians, whose leader is Nicco, the smallest group but the most feared and respected of all. And then there are the rest of us, like me. The loners.
Nicco is across the yard from me smoking a cigarette with his buddies. He and I havenât said a word to each other since my first day. Still, I know heâs been keeping an eye on me. I still donât know why he stepped in when Brown and his friends were kicking my ass. Iâve thought about walking up and just asking Nicco, but Iâm not sure that would be a good idea. Iâm still learning the ins and outs of prison life.
I canât believe itâs only been a month that Iâve been inside this hellhole. Only one hundred nineteen months left of my sentence. Three thousand twenty days, but whoâs counting?
I spot Nicco walking alone, straight to me. Shit, here we go.
âHey, Doc,â he says.
Him calling me that stings. My dream of being a doctor is over. âHey.â
Nicco holds out a cigarette for me.
âThanks, but I donât smoke.â
âYou will. Everyone does in here.â
âMaybe so. But not today, Nicco.â
He grins and lights the cigarette, taking a long drag. âYou remind me of my little brother. Youâve got fire in your gut just like Tony.â
âThatâs why you helped me. At the county jail and here on my first day. Because I remind you of your brother.â
âYeah. Heâs smart like you, too.â He leans forward and in a low tone says, âAnd heâs gay.â
Fuck. Nicco wants more than Iâm willing to give.
âIâm not gay,â I lie, hating the closet but understanding why I must remain inside itâjust like I must remain inside this goddamn prison. âI will never let you fuck me.â
âYouâve got the wrong idea, Doc. I donât want to fuck you. But I am going to protect you just like I would my fratellino if he was inside these walls.â
âThanks, Nicco, but I can take care of myself.â
âThatâs for sure. Youâve already proven that on your first day by kicking Brownâs pussy ass.â He laughs, which makes me smile. âListen up, Doc. Everyone can use friends, especially inside this place. Just know Iâve got your back.â He puts his arm around my shoulders. âEveryone is watching.â
Heâs right. Every pair of criminal eyes are turned our direction.
âThis deal is sealed, Doc. No one will bother you now.â
I realize how lucky I am to have him as a friend. âThanks, Nicco. What can I do for you?â
âNot a damn thing.â
